Here’s some of my coverage of SocialDevCamp Chicago 2011, where I was reporting for Dice. For more coverage and job news, check out Dice News.

The highlight at this year’s SocialDevCamp was a 36 hour developer hackathon, sponsored by Dice. I followed the entire event from beginning to end, needled the contestants on their lack of sleep and was ultimately impressed with what they delivered. Watch this short nine minute video as it summarizes the entire 36 hour event.

Don’t forget, it’s really important to select what sessions you plan on attending.  That information helps us put sessions that have the most interest in the largest rooms.  We can’t guarantee everyone will be able to attend every sessions, but doing this, gives us a fighting chance!  You can use any of these mobile apps to select interest.  As always, you can select interest on the web site also.  The pages that allow this (assuming you are logged) are:

http://www.siliconvalley-codecamp.com/SessionsOverview.aspx (standard html page)

http://www.siliconvalley-codecamp.com/SessionPlanToAttendChart.aspx (fancy Sencha ExtJS 4.0 JavaScript Version)

Looking forward to seeing you at code camp very soon!

Raise your rates by becoming an influencer

Posted by David Spark on September 22, 2011 @ 10:32 AM

Every time you work on an application you’re showcasing your work. But if you work on a large collaborative project, how can someone see what contributions you made? How do people know that your development talent is better than someone else’s? You can prove your worth by exposing your knowledge and wisdom. The more you’re publicly seen as an expert, the more you become an industry influencer, and as a result you can and will raise your rates.

Please register for my Silicon Valley Code Camp session “How to become an online influencer” on Saturday, October 8th at 3:30pm. Watch the video below for an outline of what you’ll learn. And to get a head start on the class, read my Mashable article, “HOW TO: Jump-Start Your Career by Becoming an Online Influencer.”

I look forward to seeing you there.

Session Plan To Attend Chart Now Available! (See Video Below)

Posted by David Spark on September 21, 2011 @ 6:23 AM

This video shows how to choose sessions you plan on attending.  It will help you with a nice listing to carry with you (once you print it) as well as help us to plan the room capacities. That helps us to not put our most popular sessions in the smallest rooms.

How to bring data into a Silverlight application

Posted by David Spark on @ 9:00 AM

At the Silicon Valley Code Camp conference last week, I spoke with Ward Bell, VP of Technology of IdeaBlade. Bell was teaching a class about databases and how to use the identity framework to model your data. We chatted about modeling your data and ultimately about how to bring data into a Silverlight application, which is ultimately what Bell’s company, IdeaBlade, does.
